The study was done during the spring, summer and fall of 1998 and 1999. Samples were taken at random from legume crops and spontaneous plants adjacent to them in the province of León (Spain). Observations were made on the following crops: Medicago sativa, Phaseolus vulgaris, Pisum sativum, Cicer arietinum, Trifolium repens, Vicia fava, Trifolium pratense, Vicia ervilia, Lathyrus cicera, Lathyrus sativus, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Lupinus albus, Lupinus angustifolius and Lens esculenta. Twenty three families of spontaneous plants were observed. The aphid species and their population densities on the spontaneous plants and crop plants were recorded, as was the presence of members of the families Coccinellidae, Syrphidae and Chrysopidae. The plant families... |

Changes in ranges of hoverflies in the Netherlands in the 20th century (Diptera: Syrphidae) In July 2001 the database of the Netherlands Syrphidae Recording Scheme contained approximately 200 000 records of Syrphidae. This database was used to examine changes in the hoverfly fauna of the Netherlands during the 20th century. The dataset was divided into two parts, before and since 1988, containing equal numbers of records. This revealed that there is a significant increase in the distribution of hoverfly species with saproxylic larvae. Probably this is a consequence of the changes in woodland management that have taken place in the past 20 years. Another result of the trend analysis is the conclusion that there is a high proportion of southern species... |

The 'real' Brachyopa dorsata in the Netherlands after 39 years (Diptera: Syrphidae) The hoverfly Brachyopa dorsata Zetterstedt, 1837 was already mentioned for the Netherlands by Van Aartsen (1970), based on a specimen from 1968, which later proved to belong to B. panzeri Goffe, 1945. On April 21, 2007, a male B. dorsata was collected from the flowers of Prunus padus in the north-western part of the Veluwe. The locality is part of a large mixed forest complex, dominated by old beeches. This is the first record of B. dorsata for the Netherlands. The species was expected, for it is known from a small number of localities in adjacent parts of Germany. |

Three species of hoverflies removed from the Dutch list (Diptera: Syrphidae) Doubtful records of three hoverfly species from the Netherlands are discussed. Two specimens previously identified as Cheilosia acutilabris Becker, 1894 belong to C. proxima (Zetterstedt, 1843). Five specimens previously identified as Melangyna ericarum (Collin, 1946) belong to M. umbellatarum (Fabricius, 1794). Four species previously identified as Paragus finitimus Goeldlin de Tiefenau, 1974 are now considered to belong to P. bicolor (Fabricius, 1794). These results lead to the conclusion that Cheilosia acutilabris, Melangyna ericarum and Paragus finitimus should be removed from the Dutch species list. |

Faunistics and ecology of the syrphid genus Epistrophe in The Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Ten species of Epistrophe have been found in the Netherlands, two of which, E. cryptica and E. similis, are recorded here for the first time. The distribution, changes in distribution and ecology of the species were investigated and are illustrated by distribution maps and diagrams of the flight period. In all species, except E. eligans, females were observed more than males. Furthermore, females seem to be active later in the season than males. It is discussed that this is probably caused by the differences in behaviour between the males of the species. |

Cheilosia griseiventris sensu Stubbs & Falk (1983) new to the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Although already recognized as a distinct species in Britain by Stubbs & Falk (1983), other authors have treated Cheilosia griseiventris (Zetterstedt, 1843) as a (possible) synonym of C. latifrons Loew, 1857. Unpublished taxonomic results indicate that these taxa should be considered as separate species, but also that there may be more than two European species involved. So possibly the name griseiventris is not applied correctly. However, until the taxonomy of the latifrons-complex is fully resolved, we use the name griseiventris. The nine specimens from the Netherlands agree with the British specimens of C. griseiventris. Based on these... |
